Can Australian aged care funding actually pay for regular acupuncture?
Yes. Under the Support at Home program (and residual Home Care Packages for existing recipients), acupuncture delivered by an AHPRA-registered Chinese medicine practitioner is fundable as an allied health / therapeutic service within the participant's Clinical Care budget. It has to be listed in their care plan and provided through their approved care management provider.
How does an older patient get assessed for aged care in Australia?
The starting point is My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or myagedcare.gov.au. A Single Assessment System assessor visits the person at home, works out their needs, and recommends a support level. Since July 2025 the old ACAT/RAS split has been unified into one assessment workforce.
Do I need to be a registered aged care provider to treat these patients?
You do not need to be a Commonwealth-approved aged care provider yourself. Instead, you contract with (or invoice) the participant's approved care management provider as a sub-contracted allied health service. Your baseline requirement is current AHPRA registration as a Chinese medicine practitioner, plus valid professional indemnity insurance.
Which aged care program covers acupuncture — CHSP, Home Care Packages, or Support at Home?
Support at Home is the primary pathway for new participants from 1 July 2025. Existing Home Care Package recipients retain their package under 'no worse off' arrangements and can continue to allocate funds to acupuncture. The Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) can fund some low-intensity allied health but is being progressively folded into Support at Home.
What conditions justify acupuncture on an older person's aged care plan?
The strongest evidence-supported indications are chronic musculoskeletal pain (low back, neck, shoulder), knee and hip osteoarthritis, chronic tension-type and migraine headache, insomnia, and post-stroke recovery. Framing goals functionally — reduced pain interference, better sleep, staying independent at home — aligns with what aged care assessors and care managers are looking for.
How many acupuncture sessions can a Support at Home participant have?
There is no fixed session cap. The number is determined by the participant's Clinical Care quarterly budget (which scales with their ongoing classification level, 1–8) and by the goals written into their care plan. Weekly or fortnightly treatment blocks are typical, reviewed alongside the standard care plan review.
