    Diverticular disease (adjunctive care)

Also known as: diverticular disease, diverticulosis, diverticulitis, diverticulosis coli

Diverticular disease means small pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the large bowel. Most people have no symptoms, but pouches can become inflamed (diverticulitis), causing pain, fever and a change in bowel habit. Chinese medicine supports the symptom-free and recovery phases, framed as Spleen deficiency with Damp, Liver Qi stagnation affecting the bowel, or Heat and Damp in the Large Intestine during flare recovery.

    Lifestyle & Diet

    • •Build up fibre gradually — wholegrains, vegetables, fruit and legumes — with plenty of water.
    • •Keep physically active; regular movement supports bowel motility.
    • •Don't ignore the urge to open your bowels, and avoid straining.
    • •During a diagnosed flare, follow your doctor's advice on diet — often a temporary low-fibre phase.
    • •Maintain a healthy weight; excess weight raises the risk of flares.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    See sources
    • •Acute diverticulitis is a medical condition — acupuncture and herbs are not used during an untreated flare.[,]
    • •Do not use strong purgative herbs or aggressive enemas with diverticular disease.[]
    • •Chinese medicine here is adjunctive only and never replaces medical assessment of bowel bleeding or severe pain.[]

Review symptoms and bowel habit monthly; any fever, bleeding or severe pain goes straight back to the GP. Recurrent flares need gastroenterology review.
