    Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylalgia)

Also known as: lateral epicondylitis, lateral epicondylalgia, extensor tendinopathy of the elbow

Tennis elbow is pain on the outside of the elbow from overuse of the forearm extensor tendons — common in tradespeople, desk workers and racket sports, not just tennis. In Chinese medicine it is obstruction of the Large Intestine channel at the elbow. Acupuncture is a common adjunct to load-management exercise.

    Lifestyle & Diet

    • •Modify the aggravating activity rather than stopping all use — graded loading of the tendon aids recovery.
    • •Check tool grip sizes and workstation setup; a thicker grip reduces extensor tendon strain.
    • •A counterforce brace can ease symptoms during unavoidable activity.

    Cautions & Contraindications

    See sources
    • •Adjunctive care does not replace assessment where there is trauma, deformity or neurological signs.[]
    • •Avoid needling directly into an acutely inflamed tendon insertion; use surrounding and distal points.[]
    • •Repeated corticosteroid injections have poor long-term outcomes — discuss options with the GP rather than cycling injections.[]

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can acupuncture help tennis elbow?+

Acupuncture is a common adjunct for lateral elbow pain and may help short-term pain relief. Lasting recovery usually depends on modifying the aggravating activity and a graded tendon-loading program.

    I don't play tennis — why do I have tennis elbow?+

Most cases come from repetitive gripping, tools, typing or lifting rather than sport. Any repeated wrist extension can overload the forearm tendons at the elbow.
