TCM Pattern Differentiation Software: What It Is, Who It's For, and How To Choose One

What Pattern Differentiation Software Actually Is

Pattern differentiation (辨證, biàn zhèng) is the central act of Chinese medicine. Everything else — point selection, herbal formula, lifestyle advice, prognosis — flows out of it. Get the pattern wrong and the rest of the treatment is decoration.

Try it now: Run a case through Medi-Chi's pattern differentiation engine → — Enter symptoms, tongue and pulse and get a ranked TCM pattern differential with citations in seconds. Free tier available.

Pattern differentiation software is a clinical decision-support tool that helps you do this faster and more thoroughly. You feed it the case. It returns a ranked list of candidate patterns with the reasoning behind each, and surfaces the treatment options that match.

It is not a replacement for the practitioner. It is a replacement for the half-hour of textbook cross-referencing you used to do at the end of a long clinic day. The simplest way to feel this is to type a Western diagnosis straight into the Medi-Chi diagnosis box and read the differential it returns.

    Why It Matters Now

Two things changed in the last few years.

First, the WHO published the ICD-11 traditional medicine module. For the first time there is an international standardised vocabulary for TCM patterns. Once you can name a pattern unambiguously, you can build software that recognises it.

Second, large language models became big enough to hold the entire classical and modern TCM literature in working memory. The cross-referencing job — the one that used to take stacks of textbooks — collapsed into a query.

Computational approaches to TCM diagnosis are now being formally validated. A wide-ranging review found that the diagnostic features practitioners detect by feel can be parameterised and measured (Matos et al., 2021), and pulse-pattern correlations have been shown to map onto measurable physiological differences (Wu & Ko, 2017). Software is no longer guessing.

If you would like to see the workflow before you sign in, the three-step overview on the homepage walks through diagnosis input, pattern resolution and prescription output.

    Who It Is For

    • Acupuncturists in private practice who want to compress notes and treatment-planning time.
    • TCM students preparing for AHPRA, NCCAOM or equivalent board exams — the differential reasoning is itself a study tool.
    • Integrative medicine clinicians (GPs, physiotherapists, naturopaths) who refer to or co-treat with TCM and want a fast way to understand the TCM framing of a case.
    • TCM educators and clinic supervisors who want a consistent reference point when teaching pattern differentiation across a cohort of students.

The Seven Things To Look For

Most pattern differentiation tools on the market today are wrappers around a generic chatbot. They look fine until you push them. Here is the checklist that separates clinical software from marketing.

    1. Practitioner-built or practitioner-supervised

If you cannot find a named, registered TCM practitioner attached to the product, walk away. The clinical accuracy of any tool is downstream of the person who decided what counts as correct. Anonymity is a flag.

Turn This Knowledge Into a Treatment Plan

Enter any Western diagnosis and get a complete TCM treatment protocol — acupuncture points, herbal formulas, moxibustion, cupping, and gua sha recommendations.

    2. Verified citations

Every recommendation should link to a real PubMed paper, Cochrane review, WHO document or classical text. The tool should run citation verification automatically — earlier-generation chatbots cheerfully invented references that did not exist. If there is no "verified" indicator next to a citation, assume it is decorative.

    3. Multi-style coverage

Textbook TCM is one style among many. Serious clinical tools also handle Master Tung, Sa-am Korean Constitutional, Japanese Meridian Therapy, Jin Three-Needle, Jeffrey Yuen, Tibetan and Vietnamese Dien Chan. The pattern is the same; the point selection differs. A tool that flattens every case into textbook TCM is doing half the job.

    4. Safety flagging built in

Forbidden points in pregnancy. Restricted herbs (Ma Huang, Fu Zi and friends under TGA). Herb-drug interactions for patients on warfarin, SSRIs, or oral contraceptives. The tool should surface these before you can save the treatment plan, not in a footnote you might miss.

    5. Evidence transparency

Open the working. The tool should show you why it ranked Pattern A above Pattern B — which symptom contributed how much weight. Black-box outputs are useless for learning and dangerous in clinic. The Medi-Chi results section shows the differential reasoning alongside the prescription, not buried two clicks away.

    6. Patient and case persistence

You should be able to save a case, re-open it next visit, and update the differential as new findings emerge. Pattern differentiation is iterative — the tool should be too.

    7. Works under clinic conditions

Offline access for the moment your Wi-Fi drops out mid-consult. Mobile responsive for the practitioner who likes to type notes on a tablet. Quick load times. These are mundane things that decide whether you actually use the tool or quietly stop opening it.

What Pattern Differentiation Software Should Not Do

It should not make the diagnosis without you. It should not bypass the four pillars (inspection, auscultation, inquiry, palpation). It should not present a single answer with false confidence — pattern differentiation is probabilistic, and the tool should reflect that.

If you find yourself agreeing with the tool reflexively because the output looks authoritative, you have stopped practising and started rubber-stamping. Use the differential to challenge your own thinking, not to replace it.

    A Note On Cost

Most tools sit between free (with severe limits) and a few hundred dollars a year for an unrestricted practitioner subscription. The right way to think about price: how many minutes per consult does it save, and how many consults do you do a week? At twenty consults a week and ten minutes saved per consult, the tool pays for itself in week one.

    A Note On Students

If you are studying for boards, the tool is itself a curriculum. Enter a case from a textbook. Read the differential reasoning. Compare it to the answer the textbook gives. The places where the tool and the textbook disagree are the places worth digging into. That is where pattern differentiation actually lives.

Try One On A Case That Stumped You

The honest test of any pattern differentiation tool is the case that you spent half an hour on last week and never quite landed. Run it through. If the tool's differential matches your eventual answer faster than you got there, the tool earns its place. If it disagrees, the disagreement is the interesting bit.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is TCM pattern differentiation software?

Software that takes a clinical picture — symptoms, tongue, pulse, Western diagnosis — and returns the most likely TCM patterns (zheng), ranked by probability, with the differential reasoning. Good tools also surface treatment options and cite the evidence.

    Is it accurate?

For common single-pattern presentations, agreement with experienced practitioners is high. For multi-pattern complex cases the tool gives you a ranked differential — final pattern selection is yours. Treat it as a clinical decision-support tool, not a final answer.

Is pattern differentiation software useful for students?

Yes — arguably more so than for practitioners. Students can enter a case, see the differential reasoning broken down, and learn the textbook logic by example. The tool teaches the why, not just the what.
