    Frequently Asked Questions

What can a tongue tell you about your health?

In TCM, the tongue reflects the state of internal organs, the balance of Yin and Yang, and the presence of pathogenic factors. The tongue body colour indicates Blood and Qi status, the coating reveals digestive health and pathogen presence, and the shape shows fluid metabolism and organ vitality.

What does a white tongue coating mean in Chinese medicine?

A thin white coating is normal and indicates healthy digestion. A thick white coating suggests Cold or Dampness patterns — often seen with poor digestion, bloating, or loose stools. A white greasy coating points to Phlegm-Damp accumulation.

What does a red tongue mean?

A red tongue body indicates Heat in the body. If the sides are redder, it suggests Liver Fire (often linked to stress and irritability). A red tip indicates Heart Fire (anxiety, insomnia). A uniformly red tongue with little coating suggests Yin Deficiency with Empty Heat.
