    Back-Shu Points 背俞穴

The twelve Back-Shu (Bèi Shū) points sit on the inner Bladder line, 1.5 cùn lateral to the spine. Each one is the direct back-projection of a single Zàng-Fǔ organ — and together they form the most efficient diagnostic and treatment corridor in classical acupuncture. Every point below deep-links into the Medi-Chi point database.

    How to read this table

    • Spinal level — the vertebra the point sits alongside (measured from the lower border of the spinous process).
    • Front-Mù pair — the corresponding gathering point on the front of the body. Needling the pair together is a classical Shū-Mù treatment.
    • Clinical note — how the point tends to behave in practice, and the pairings Medi-Chi's diagnosis engine reaches for first.

    Frequently asked

    What are the Back-Shu points?

The Back-Shu (Bèi Shū Xué 背俞穴) are twelve points on the inner Bladder line, 1.5 cùn lateral to the spine, where the Qi of each Zàng-Fǔ organ 'infuses into the back'. They regulate their partnered organ directly, and palpating them is one of the fastest diagnostic surveys in TCM.

How are Back-Shu points used diagnostically?

Tender, cool, hollow or knotted Back-Shu points typically indicate a chronic, deficient or Yin pattern in the associated organ. Compare bilateral tone, temperature and tenderness during palpation — the finding often precedes overt symptoms.

    What is a Shū-Mù treatment?

Pairing a Back-Shu (Yang aspect, on the back) with the same organ's Front-Mù point (Yin aspect, on the chest/abdomen) creates a front-back Yin-Yang balance targeting a single organ system — e.g. BL-23 Shèn Shū with GB-25 Jīng Mén for Kidney patterns, or BL-20 Pí Shū with LR-13 Zhāng Mén for Spleen patterns.

Are the outer-line 'spirit' points also Back-Shu?

No. The outer Bladder line (3 cùn lateral to the spine) holds a parallel set named for the ethereal aspect of each organ — Pò Hù (BL-42) for the Corporeal Soul of the Lung, Hún Mén (BL-47) for the Ethereal Soul of the Liver, and so on. They are usually reserved for psycho-emotional and constitutional work rather than physical organ regulation.
